What new domains could overtake .com?
Currently, there are about 85 million .com domain names. Even with the introduction of extensions such as .info, .biz and .eu, .com still dominates the domain name marketplace.
As ICANN prepares to release a new group of extensions, what new domain extension could threaten .com’s dominance?
Well, perhaps we should be taking a closer look at some private namespaces that might be tempted to launch their own extension?
TechCrunch reported today that there are currently 100 million registered users on Twitter. And, we found that as of March 2010, there are 400 million registered Facebook users and as of January 2009, 500 million Windows Live users are reported. These figures are pretty impressive and don’t even touch upon Amazon, Google and Yahoo users.
Who do you think will apply for their own domain extension?

Oh, thanks for sharing the list!
I’d like to say .pro’s as to me it sounds more exclusive than .com as .com although very popular and the first internet extension may become less popular over time. Guess we have to see a big company step up and really promote the professional domains. Like an espn.pro vs espn.com what do you think sounds better?
Tom,
Good point, You might want to consider the fact that with all these extensions proposed it could dilute the mix. In this case your .pros stand a shot as you suggest.
Interesting point. Premium generic names are now available in .pro for a fraction of the price of .com, and that certainly could be a motivating factor for some…Maybe the small guys have to show the big guys how it can work?
