Today Verisign, the .name registry, announced that ICANN approved the request to remove pure numbers and combinations of numbers and hyphens from the list of names required to be reserved at the second level.
This update means that customers may now:
· Add second level domain names with pure numbers and/or combinations of numbers and hyphens
· Add domain names with pure numbers and/or combinations of numbers and hyphens at the second level of a
third level domain name;
· Add NameWatch with pure numbers and/or combinations of numbers and hyphens;
· Add standard and premium Defensive Registrations with pure numbers and/or combinations of numbers and
hyphen; and
· Add Email Forwarding registrations with pure numbers and/or combinations of numbers and hyphen.
This change follows a series of changes to the .name domain, including the internationalization of .name. With over 90% of the world’s population speaking a language other than English and more than 50% of Internet users being non-English speakers, .name supports non-english characters. Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) for .name are supported for Second-Level and Third-Level Domain Names and for Standard and Premium Defensive Registrations.
